1,College endowment: college endowment is a perpetual source of support for the University and its mission of teaching and research. Some categories of funds supports faculty and students, including financial aid for undergraduates, graduate fellowships, and student life and activities for the long-term, from generation to generation.
So, we might instead direct our attention to where these funds go. And more precisely, how much of this funding is going to the undergraduate student population? Perhaps some departments and offices offer funding opportunities for study programs abroad, or language classes over the summer. Rather than just looking at how much the college’s endowment is, it may be more prudent to take a closer look at what privilege sit concretely provides students. Maybe the dorms are spacious and new with the gym donning well-kept equipment.
2,Student-to-faculty ratio: An important thing to remember is that this ratio can be skewed in so many ways, especially at larger research universities where professors tend to focus their attention on graduate students. Some alternative ways to see what personal attention undergraduates receive are small classes (often donning titles like “freshmen seminars” or “tutorials”), how many undergraduates complete research with faculty, and what sort of events the college promotes for faculty to spend with undergraduates (perhaps funding to have a meal or coffee together).
3,Salary Potential: This figure is often higher at more technical universities (that is, with mostly engineering students). Perhaps a poignant example would be that both these measures are higher at Harvey Mudd College (one of the “Claremont Colleges”) than at Harvard. Still, which school have you heard of? If one of your criteria is how much your college degree will finance your future, then you may reconsider how you look at prestige—or at least in what you decide to major.
4,Alumni Association: an alumni association is a group of graduates from a particular university who set up an independent group for the purpose of organizing social and university-related events. These associations often organize social events, publish newsletters, and raise funds for the university. They also serve as a way for graduates tomaintain connections to not only their university, but also with their fellow graduates. Additionally, these groups usually seek to support and help new alumni in the local area, and provide a venue for which both personal and business relationships can be established between graduates of that particular university.
The one concern for parents and students is that if the student pursues their university education in a foreign country, the student will not have the opportunity to establish social and business contacts in China. Although there is some truth in this, it does not take into account that certain US universities have huge numbers of Chinese students and because these Chinese students find themselves in a foreign country and needing the help of their peers, very often, the bonds that they establish with one another are often deeper than the ties built between students studying locally.
Upon graduation, many of these same students return to China to start their careers. During their professional lives, they continue to help and support the friends they made in university both socially and professionally. For this reason, it is very important that Chinese students do not overlook the strength of the alumni network of US universities here in China. US universities with strong alumni networks inChina include: University of Southern California, New York University, University of Michigan, Boston University, Michigan State University, University of Illinois, Purdue University, University of Texas-Austin, Indiana University.
