I didn’t have a dream school. I had about 20. I took advantage of all the opportunities my college preparatory boarding school provided us with. I read up on schools in our college-counseling library, met with admissions reps and went on college visits. After learning about so many great places, I had trouble narrowing down my choices. Looking over my exhaustive college list, my high school College Counselor made her one and only school suggestion to me: Mount Holyoke College. When I looked it up later, I stopped at the first thing I saw. It was an all women’s college.
我以前没有梦寐以求的大学。当时我大概申请了20所,我充分利用了大学预备寄宿制学校提供给我们的机会去钻研大学咨询库,会见了招生官并且进行了大学参观。在了解了那么多卓越的大学后我发现我很难缩小我的选择范围。我高中的择校咨询老师在看了我详尽的大学选项列表后给了我一个并且是唯一一个择校建议:去曼何莲学院。在我查过她的资料后我的目光停在了我最先看到的地方:她是所女子学院。
Up until then, I had only taken classes in a co-educational environment. I believed my upbringing provided a “balanced” education. I began to wonder whether it would be possible to develop fully as a person in a single-sex school. Although I had some skepticism, I applied.
到那时为止,我只在男女同校的环境下上课。我认为我的教养能够适应一种“平衡”的教育。我开始好奇在女校读书是否有可能能够让一个人全面发展。尽管我对这个选择有些怀疑,但是我还是申请了这所大学。
Soon after, to my surprise, the school invited me to the campus to participate in their Focus on Diversity program, all expenses paid. Sadly, I couldn’t go because I had a huge English essay to work on at the time. However, I was happy about one thing: I felt the school taking a real interest in me. From then, I made it my business to get to know the Mount Holyoke better. I wasn’t certain if I would like it there or not, but I was certainly willing to find out.
不久,出乎我的意料,这所学校竟邀请我去她的校园里参加他们的“聚焦多元化”活动,全程免费。可惜的是我那时正好要写一篇长篇论文。然而有一件事让我很开心,那就是我能感觉到这所大学是真的在关心我。从那以后我着手去更加深入了解曼何莲女子学院。那时我并不确定我是否要去那儿上大学,但是我是真的自愿去了解这所学校。
I accepted my offer of admission to Mt. Holyoke because of their investment in me. Another part of my decision was based the fact that I was learning and developing throughout the process of applying. It did not escape me that applying to Mt. Holyoke was, in itself, a lesson in being more open. Looking back, much of my decision was based on these two feelings rather than a checklist of criteria or ranking.
由于曼何莲学院的认可我收到了录取通知书。另一方面,之所以我决定去曼何莲女子学校是因为我在申请过程中学习并且成长了不少。我认识到申请曼何莲学院这一过程本身就是以一节让我的视野更加开放的课。回顾申请的过程,我所做的决定大多是基于以上这两种感觉而不是指标与排名。
As College Counselors ad Education Consultants, we see a range in how students approach the college application process, from timid and unsure to serious and obsessive. Going to college, especially as international students, is a major decision and investment—students should be mindful of this—but it doesn’t have to be all business. Students can also experience a kind of growth when they lend themselves to it. I came to Zhimeng Education to continue my work in guiding students to trust in their feeling and their voice, to be open to possibility, and to grow.
作为高校辅导教育顾问,我们看到了一系列学生如何进行大学申请的情况,有畏手畏脚、犹疑不定的,也有严肃对待、追求完美的。上大学,特别是出国留学的是一项对人生十分重要的决策以及投资——这点学生们都应该清楚——但是这并不是全部。学生们也应该去全身心地体验一种成长。我来智梦教育是为了继续我的工作,指引学生们去相信自己的感觉,倾听他们的心声,去面向一切可能性和成长的经历。
In my previous work mentoring Chinese applicants in admissions essay writing, we would always say, “All writing problems are thinking problems.” That is to say, tackling the admissions essay begins with a solid and thoughtful approach. I think the same is true for all parts of the application process. Whether working on an essay or considering admissions offers, keeping an open and self-aware attitude helps prospective undergraduates do their best and make confident decisions. It is my pleasure to work with this year’s cohort of students and help them to approach their future.
我先前的工作是指导中国留学申请学生写申请文书的写作,在这过程中我们一直强调一个观点:“所有的写作问题都是思想问题”。也就是说,应对申请文书的写作问题就应该从扎实周到的方法开始。我认为这点对于申请过程中的每一个环节都是如此。无论是写申请文书还是考虑录取,保持开放以及尊重自我意识的态度有助于准大学生们尽最大的努力,做自信的决定。我很高兴今年能和学生们一起努力,帮助他们走向他们的未来之路。
