I come from a family of performers. My sister was a dancer. My other sister is a working actress in Los Angeles. My father was a trained actor and singer. His father was a singer. So, it’s notentirely surprising that I found my way into theater. What I did not expect was that my study of performance in college would be so foundational to who I am as a human being and to every aspect of my life, inside and outside of the theater.
I thought that I wanted to major in the Princeton’s famous Woodrow Wilson School of International and Public Affairs. After my first semester, I realized that it was not what I wanted, and I became a Classics major, intending to focus on Latin and Ancient Greek. However, by the end of my freshman year, I had taken my first English and playwriting classes and knew that theater would be my focus at Princeton.
Princeton has a very interdisciplinary approach, which means that you learn about the theater from every perspective, unlike going to an acting school, where one learns only about acting. In my time, I took courses in acting, directing, playwriting, casting, and of course many classes in the literature of the theater. I not only read the great Western works of theater, plays by Sophocles, Anton Chekhov, Bertolt Brecht,Tennessee Williams, and many more, but also Chinese plays such as ‘The Peony Pavilion’and ‘The Legend of the White Snake,’ as well as plays from other cultures.
Studying theater gave me great opportunities to travel, almost entirely paid for by the University. After my sophomore year, I spent the summer in Athens,Greece, taking acting classes and working with local artists. After my junior year, I traveled to Norway to learn about Henrik Ibsen and learn Norwegian. This trip was in preparation for my acting thesis, a production of Hedda Gabler, a play about a woman trapped in a loveless marriage. In this unusual production, I actually played the lead (female) character, as you can see in the picture.
For my thesis in the English department, I wrote and directed an adaptation of an Ancient Greek drama, ‘The Bacchae.’ In this play, there were seven songs, for which I wrote the lyrics, and another student wrote the music. This was one of the most rewarding experiences of my time in college.
Employers inside and outside of the theater continue to be impressed by my experience in the theater. Working in theaters taught me to pay attention to small details, work within budgets, do sales, organize large events, and work very diligently, all skills that translate immediately into a host of other careers. I had no shortage of opportunities coming out of college. On top of that, gaining the confidence to perform infront of thousands of people makes job interviews and group presentations seem incredibly easy and low-stress.
Studying theater taught me a lot more than I ever expected. I’ve learned culture, other languages, life skills, business skills, psychology, history, and a lot more. I had a wonderful time studying theater, and I would definitely encourage other students to consider studying the arts (either as a major, minor, or extracurricular activity) during their time in college.
