If I could give freshmen one piece of advice,it would be to be flexible.Not the dancer type of flexible,but flexible in their decisions, mentality and dreams. As a freshman, I knewthat I would eventually be the next big French-speaking American editor of a magazine like Vogue. By the time I was graduating, I had just taken a job as an educational consultant and teacher in a Chinese-speaking country. Realizingthat journalismwasn’t for me – and being flexible enough to accept that – led to me find my real passion for education. This was one of the biggest changes to my dreams and goals, but it was in no way the only one – and had come from plenty of other times where I was forced to be flexible in an unexpected situation.

Many students will go into college with the same sort of preconceived ideas that I did, and many of them will be faced with the startling realization that it just won’t work the way you planned.Being flexible will make you look for new plans, new interests, new career opportunities, and new friends when things don’t work the way you thought they would. Furthermore, if you’re flexible, you will be able to look outside these dreams (even if they are working out) and perhaps find something that you wantmore.

很多学生会怀揣着和我当初一样的想法迈入校园，而他们中的大部分人都会面临着惊异地意识到现实不会像他们想的那样前进。当生活不像你想的那样继续时，这种灵活会让你寻找新的计划，新的兴趣，新的就职机遇和新的朋友。此外，如果你足够灵活，你能够跳出这些梦想（即便是即将实现的梦想）找到你渴望更多的事物。

Whether its being open to trying new classes when your first choice is closed or trying a new team when you don’t make the one you wanted, having the flexibility to embrace any change and accept something other than what you expected will make your college experience so much more fulfilling and unique.
