Thebest class I took as an undergrad was a graduate seminar on autism. I took this in the fall of my senior year, and at this point, I was well into my psychology degree and had been working inan autism research lab for over a year. The class was not required and it didn’t offer grades – I took it merelyto enjoy and to learn. Another reason Itook it was because it was taught by one of my intellectual heroes at the time:esteemed autism researcher Eric Courschene.
Theclass only had about 30 students in it, mostly graduate students. Each week, either a guest lecturer came in ora student from the class gave a small mini-lecture on a different autismrelated topic. These were fascinating. One week we discussed epidemiology(and the debate over whether autism incidence are actually augmenting), inanother week we discussed autistic savant skills.
Myassignment was to discuss a theory of autism called enhanced perceptualfunction, which basically argues that the way in which autistic individualsperceive the world is superior to the typically developing population. I was so nervous about presenting, that Ipracticed my 20 minute presentation over 30 times. In the end, it went extremely well – thepresentation went off without a hitch and I was able to successfully answer thequestions from the class. The best partwas right after the lecture. Dr.Courschene came up to me and talked to me about the topic himself and wechatted for a few minutes. Sayinggoodbye to me, he said, “I can tell you really understand this material, congratulations”. It was one of myfavorite academic moments from college.

The worst class I had as an undergraduate was abnormalpsychology, which I took at UC Santa Cruz during a summer session. The woman teaching the class was a professionaltherapist, but did not have much teaching experience. The material was interesting, but theteaching style made it difficult to get excited about it. On rare occasion, she’d tell us some of herpersonal anecdotes from her therapy experience. Generally speaking though, the lectures consisted of her opening thetextbook and reading from it for forty-five minutes - extremely boring anduninspiring.
